It would be great to be alerted when there are invoices still in Needs Action that should be matched before I submit my GST return

This has now been implemented as a feature.
If you have unmatched invoices within the GST period you are filing for, you will get the below warning.

Hi Franco, you will have a red banner in your GST return appear if your account isn't fully balanced up to date for the GST period. Your account won't be balanced if you havent coded and matched your transactions for the period.
